Things I'm Trying to Teach My Children

Ever taken a good, long look in the mirror after you've attempted to correct something basic in your child's behavior? If you look long and honestly enough, you'll probably find you haven't fully grasped the simple things either.

The Road Home

Immigration is a hot topic these days, but have you ever looked at it from a spiritual perspective? Philippians 3:20 says, “Our citizenship is in heaven.” That makes us immigrants here on earth. We’ll take a look at what role our “immigration status” plays as we travel the road of life.

Along the Way, Let's Go Bird Watching

Things to learn along the journey brings us to a reality check when it comes to living in the tension of how God has designed us and the world we live in. We will look at our families, neighborhoods, communities, and churches and contrast how we live compared to the books of Acts. We will explore how we could be intentional in living lives that make a difference.

No Regrets

Most of us parents feel a tremendous pressure to give our kids the right “package” of experiences to help them get ahead in life. To a large extent, we truly believe that the key to their success comes from helping them find where they are gifted at and then giving them that little edge by putting them on that team or arts program. To do otherwise, we believe, would be to put them behind the curve of their peers. And so we find ourselves running from one practice, game, recital or rehearsal to another - All so that our kids have the best opportunity to succeed in life. As a parent of three, I understand this pressure. While childhood experiences are important I believe there is something even more important that directly leads to the overall success of our kids. Join us as we see what the Bible has to say about parenting with "No Regrets".

Works Without Faith

The “Revolution” of love that we find in the book of Acts is about doing something. As James says, “faith without works is dead” but... works without faith is meaningless. As we grow in our “Acts” of kindness and compassion, we must also grow in our faith – in our understanding of the God we are serving. In Paul’s later writings (and in other late New Testament writings), we find a desire to seek “sound doctrine.” Do we really know what we believe? Are we continuing
to work out our faith? What are we basing our faith decisions on? Logic? Experience? Academics? Let’s be careful not to focus on works without faith.

More Than Meets the Eye

Just because you can’t explain something, it doesn’t mean it’s not real. Paul was surrounded by unexplainable miracles and supernatural encounters. As he was “explaining” himself before Festus, a Roman official, Festus barked, “You’re out of your mind, Paul!” Eventually, Paul’s actions led him to house arrest in the mighty city of Rome – the center of the world and the place Paul longed to go. While there he wrote four letters from prison: Ephesians, Philippians, Colossians and Philemon. In his letter to the Ephesians he outlines how the unseen enemy strategizes against the church, the mind, the family and work. Paul implores us to “put on the full armor of God” because there’s more going on in this world than what meets the eye.

Acts 26:19-32, 28:1-6, Ephesians 1:18-21, Ephesians 4:1-6:17, Colossians 3:5-14

Foolish and Weak

The Revolution is expanding from Jerusalem to Judea and Samaria. Paul now travels to many other nearby countries – pursuing Christ’s mandate to reach the “ends of the earth.” Meanwhile, James (the brother of Jesus) writes the first New Testament book – aggressively challenging believers that “faith without works is dead.” Paul concurs in his first New Testament letter to the Galatians. We cannot earn our salvation – but a person of genuine faith cannot help but join The Revolution by doing something.

Do Something

After the story of “The Messiah” in Matthew, Mark, Luke and John – the rest of the New Testament centers around the book of Acts. It is the story of the first followers of Christ boldly spreading his message of revolutionary love. In Acts 1:8, Jesus says the revolution would start in Jerusalem – and it does with the coming of the Holy Spirit. The disciples were powerfully moved to not just think and pray about spiritual things – but to Do Something! Hopefully, as we join “The Revolution”, our faith will lead us to do something as well.

...Who Gave His Life

Jesus fulfilled prophecies, taught boldly and connected deeply. He was undeniably remarkable. But the true climax of the Whole Shebang is his death and resurrection. As we reflect on and discover our “God Story” (our unique relationship with God), we must connect with both. Through his death, we are no longer separated from God – we are forgiven. Through his resurrection, we are no longer dead – we are victorious!

...Who Connected Deeply

Through the person of Jesus Christ, God became very personal. He chose to become “with” us and connected deeply with the twelve disciples. He modeled for us that this is done through the limited commodity of… time. In order to connect deeply with our spouse, kids or friends, we need to spend time with them. Time turns into moments, memories and depth. It’s also the way we pour into others. It’s the way we reproduce ourselves – as Christ reproduced himself through the twelve young men who continued the Revolution of Love that Jesus began.

...Who Taught Boldly

In one sense, Jesus’ time on earth was tragically short. Only three years!? But he provided an incredible legacy through the words he spoke during those short three years. He modeled what effective teaching could be. Modern teachers of the Word are often challenged for not being “deep” enough. By many standards, Jesus wasn’t “deep” – he never did a full exegesis of the elements of the tabernacle, for example. But his words were wonderfully magnetic, incredibly practical, painfully offensive and profoundly kingly. He had a few things to say before he marched up the Via Dolorosa – and we are wise to listen. Overall challenge for this week: Become Well Red.

Matthew 5:1-12 (magnetic), Matthew 5:21-48 (practical), Matthew 6:1-4 (offensive), Matthew 6:9-13

...Who Met Expectations

The success, health or appreciation of anything in life has much to do with expectations. If something surpasses expectations, it is great. If it falls short, it becomes a disappointment. For some, Jesus was precisely the One they had been waiting for. He fulfilled all messianic prophecies in the Old Testament. In other words… he met expectations. For others, he did not. He was not what many expected him to be. As we encounter Jesus, it’s important to know what we can expect from a relationship with him – and what we cannot.

The Crux of the Story

crux [kruhks] n. 1. the basic, central or pivotal point, 2. cross

The cross of Jesus Christ is the pivotal point in the story of human existence. All of history led up to the execution of this perfectly innocent rabbi – and the world has been transformed since. This Easter we will celebrate the person of Jesus Christ; we will be reminded of how the cross fits into the grand story of life; and we will explore how the cross can be the “pivotal point” in all our lives.

Post-Exile

The people of God were promised hope and comfort while they were in exile. That’s a beautiful thing... but what about getting out!? Hope can last for awhile – but what about restoration? What about things getting fixed? After many years, about 50,000 people returned to Jerusalem to rebuild their broken city. They began with the altar (the place where sin is dealt with), then the temple (where people experienced fellowship with God), and finally they completed the wall around the city (a symbol of significance in ancient cities). God offers restoration – but it often doesn’t look the way we expect.

The Event

Through scripture, conscience and community, God warns and warns us toward making good and wise decisions in life. But when we cross that line and pass the point when warnings are relevant, God instantly shifts to comfort. God finds no pleasure in saying “I told you so” or heaping on the weight of guilt and shame. Comfort comes instantly. But... relief does not. God often uses our time in “exile” to reshape, reform and renew. The overall message God is giving to those in exile is: there is hope!

Pre-Exile

It seems that God did not want to kick his people out of their land (ie, send them into “exile”). He sent numerous prophets at different times, to different places, in different ways to warn them what would happen if they did not change their ways. A warning is not a bad thing – it’s actually a gracious thing. It gives us a chance to alter the outcome. Through scripture, our conscience and relationships, God continues to lovingly warn us today. Will we take his warnings seriously – or just take our chances?

The Divided Kingdom

“The Exile” is the story of the Israelites getting kicked out of their land because they didn’t pay attention to the warnings of the prophets. But before this happened they were internally divided into the North (Israel) and the South (Judah). This is important in the overall story because internal division often precedes the fall. We are wise to remember that our spouse is not our enemy but our ally. Our parents, co-workers, friends, brothers, sisters are not our enemies – they are our allies.

What is the Wise Thing to Do?

At this point God has established his people as a powerful nation. So how does a follower of God know how to “do life”? Scripture is not a rulebook that has all the answers. It’s not a 2000 page puzzle to be figured out. The beauty of God’s design is that our quest to “do life well” is intended to draw us closer to him! It is in a restored relationship with God that we can discover our unique path in life. The question is not a generic “What’s the right thing to do?” The question – that both enhances and flows out of relationship – is “What is the wise thing to do?”

Am I Significant?

We are fascinated by power because we all want it. Either we want the “Earthly Power” of prestige and wealth – or the “Spiritual Power” of strength and courage. Or, more likely and honestly... we want both! King David was the most powerful person in the Old Testament. He was the poster boy for both Earthly Power and Spiritual Power. As we seek our place in the Whole Shebang, we have much to learn from his story.

Do I Really Need to be "Saved"?

The idea of a “relationship” with God is a beautiful and unique thing. Since it is a relationship, it must be optional. But don’t let that soften our intense and absolute need for him. We are broken, fallen and doomed to death. Make no mistake... we are in desperate need for a Deliverer, a Redeemer... a Savior.

Can I Really Trust God?

There are two central stories that shape the Old Testament: Exodus and Exile. Here, we look at the Exodus story. God established the Jewish nation through which he would reveal himself. Now, he is going to take that entire nation from slavery in Egypt to victory in the Promised Land. What God wants to convey through the Exodus story is that we can trust him. We can be a trusting people – to trust God and trust others.

Exodus 1:8-13, Exodus 3:1-15, Exodus 8-12, Exodus 16:2-21, Exodus 20:8-11, Matthew 4:1-11, I Corinthians 11:23-26

Who Are the Jews?

God formed a new nation – the descendants of a man named Abraham. God established a covenant with them – that he would be their God – that he would be “with them”. In the New Testament this covenant is upgraded to include all who believe in Jesus. All who are followers of Christ are spiritually “Jewish” and, therefore, benefit from the promise that God will always be “with them”.

What Went Wrong?

God is the creator and designer of the Whole Shebang. What he made was intentionally “good” – not perfect. What he made was an unfinished story that he has invited us to participate in. But with this freedom to participate comes the freedom to make mistakes. But fortunately... God had a redemptive plan from the very beginning.

How and Why Did It All Begin?

There are three main characters in The Whole Shebang: God, Satan and us. Job paints a great picture of the dynamics of these relationships. God seeks relationship with us - Satan does all he can to destroy it. As we live out our story, we are wise to remember that there is much going on behind the scenes.
